Scumbria,

Why are some people on the Intel thread so deep in denial about the 1.13GHz PIII launch?

RE: <It is important to make sure that people in positions of power don't abuse it. The last thing I want to see is the threads go off into la-la land like they were doing about Dell, 1.5GHz, $200 share price, etc., etc.

The opposing, and sometimes virulent comments of Paul, Elmer, etc. are absolutely essential for keeping these threads on track.>

Scumbria,

Actually I thought your posts about the unlikelyhood of any 1.5GHz... Dell... 100$ stock price...[insert hype here] were much more effective than any that Paul would have made. Paul's would have only led to bickering for the sake of bickering. And the mod thread is certainly not lacking for contrary opinions right now. Kash is providing a lot of dissenting opinion and since his posts are not diatribes filled with insults and slanders but are instead well thought out they are being much better recieved and not rejected off hand since they come from a "hostile" source.

Paul's diatribes are definitely not necessary to maintain balance. In fact I think the dissenting opinions have become a lot more persuasive on the mod thread because they are well thought out discussions rather than petty arguments.

JMHO,

Epinephrine

Nice cliche. I'm happy that it doesn't (imho) even slightly apply to our conversation.

There will always be people who do this, regardless of what you or others try to do. It'll happen if everybody is nice to each other, and it will happen if the place becomes a total warzone. I would prefer the former, since the latter can dramatically reduce the signal-to-noise ratio of the board.

I disagree partly. Opposing comments are essential. Virulent comments, as you call them, are absolutely nonessential. When Paul (for example) left SI:AMD for a while, several people almost instantly took up positions essentially along the lines of "Since the mean people aren't here, we're going to emphasize against people who hype the stock". In short, the board had contrarian views and mediative folk helping out the thread with as much success as the straight flamers (eg, none) but a lot fewer stupid and needless insults being thrown around.

Of course, none of this was intended to personally offend you. I'm one of those strange people who thinks that people can have intelligent conversations -- even arguments -- without trying to discredit or demoralize others. I know you have had intelligent conversations since I've seen you contribute information on this thread. I inadvertently dragged you into this because I was just incredibly shocked when you jumped into the mod thread and essentially said something vaguely along the intent of "I'm going to be overtly rude and avoid being helpful so that I can fail at proving that Mani is a totalitarian communist". I know you're a better person than that (so long as you're not posting to SI:Intel or SI:RMBS). And I know that I'm appearing overly Libertarian / Republican / Communist / Technocratic / Theocratic / whatever when I say that, but I cannot help being the person that I am.
