Verizon Wireless plans to buy $500 million in wireless equipment
from Nortel Networks Inc. over the next two years as it works to
increase the capacity and coverage of its wireless system.

The agreement will likely also include optical transport and
asynchronous transfer mode switches for use in major
metropolitan markets, as well as additional equipment to expand
the company's current microwave backbone network, the
company said.

Verizon Wireless previously announced plans to invest more than
$3 billion in its network by the end of this year.
