As I see it there are two possibilities. Either the technology is; 1. good but basically very similar to what Qtera--now Nortel--has to offer, or 2. it is a step ahead of anyone else. I don't think that it can be just a lot of hot air given that the trials with Broadwing and Williams are thus far successful. You can't fake that. Sure, their equity stake in Corvis might sway them to favor Corvis over Qtera if they were roughly equal, but Broadwing and Williams have to answer to their shareholders as well, who, shall we say, wouldn't be to happy if their company spent $200 million on gear that did nothing. If the technology is roughly equal to Qtera--scenario 1., then we are probably talking about Raman amplification for the ultra long distance, repeaterless transmission. For the optical wavelength routing we are probably talking about a MEMs based switch of some kind. If, however, the technology is a cut above that of Qtera--scenario 2--then Corvis may be using solitons along with Raman amplification for the long distance transmission capability. Solitons would also allow Corvis to ultimately increase the bandwidth per fiber significantly beyond what DWDM alone can do. Keep in mind, Corvis did buy Algety--a company that specializes in soliton technology. For the wavelength router, they may have chosen tunable semiconductor lasers instead of MEMs which would probably put them ahead of anyone else in terms of speed, scalability, and flexibilty. Another interesting factor to consider, is that Cisco also knows what Corvis' technology is due to its substantial equity stake in the company. If the trials continue to be successful, Cisco may feel pressure to make a bid for Corvis, particularly since Nortel already scooped up Qtera and Cisco's optical strategy has yet to gel despite its acquisitions of Monterey, Pirelli, and Cerent. Anyone else's thoughts would be appreciated. Still keeping an eye on Corvis but am not in yet.
