How early do the big OEM's start to build boxes for the "very early" Christmas season, ie. pre-Thankgiving sales?

Don't know. I suspect that in response to Dell, most OEMs have stream-lined operations to minimize inventory. I suspect that they receive processors on a weekly basis and plug them into their boxed as they go out the door. My guess would be one month from the date AMD ships a chip to a major OEM to the time it appears on the shelf at retail (one year ago it was probably two months). That's my WAG, anyway.

Could any of the 3.6 million parts be sold as part of this sales period?

By definition, no. AMD does not record a sale until it is sold to the end user.
