Who is going to manufacture GSM-1XRTT handsets? Or GSM-cdma2000 handsets? No company has announced an intention to do so. No company has even announced GSM-CDMA chipset shipping dates.

I don't see any operator choosing a combination of standards that has no vendor backing. I understand that it's possible to combine GSM with 1XRTT - but if nobody is already doing that, the time is running out.

Maybe GPRS-bashing is now in vogue - but there are at least 15 different GSM-GPRS phones rolling out by next spring. There is real vendor support from all Top Five phone brands in the market. Shanghai Unicom is implementing GPRS. Nokia just landed a GPRS deal in Taiwan and Hong Kong has a bundle of GPRS deals.

Looking at the orders, the entire Chinese GSM market of mainland-Taiwan-Hong Kong seems to be moving towards GPRS. If 1XRTT is a viable rival - where are the contracts? Why is there not a single GSM operator doing 1XRTT implementation?

It's just five months until year 2001. The clock is ticking.
