There's a pretty good way to get a handle on the importance of a single standard. You compare the per capita phone sales in a single standard country to per capita sales in a multiple-standard country.

Italy-USA, Poland-Russia, Spain-Canada.

It doesn't matter which ones you pick as long as the countries have a roughly similar economic situation - the market penetration difference is always there. There is no doubt whatsoever that a single standard is the biggest factor in determining the success of mobile telecommunications in any given country.

More than that - the mobile data revenue of operators in single-standard markets are vastly higher than data revenue of operators in multiple-standard markets. Up to 20% of the overall mobile revenue in some single-standard markets.
