Rick:

Have you (or anyone else) noticed the distortion in COMS historical data brought about by the PALM spin-off? Most data feeds I've checked have now corrected their historical data, and the way they've done it (probably the only easy way) is to apply a 4.757 or thereabouts split to the COMS historical data (where 4.757=1/.2102, the spin off basis for the COMS sans PALM).

The result of this is that the 52 week high shows up now as around $25 on 3/1/00, and the real previous all time high of $81.375 back in 1996, when COMS was pure COMS w/o USRX, PALM, etc., now shows as about $17, and the lows from last year show at around $4 to $5.

Unless you do a "bottom up" analysis (should that be "bottoms up"?) to figure out the intrinsic worth of COMS, you don't have any idea what it's worth. So if you're a new investor to COMS, or a trader just thinking of taking or selling a position (long or short), and you just look at stochastics, chart tops/bottoms, volume, etc. etc. w/o any idea of the history, you'd be inclined to think about selling/shorting COMS somewhere in here, no? Certainly at $20+?

The point is that I'm getting the feeling that we're really in uncharted territory here, and it's a completely new game. It's going to be interesting to see what happens if we get another run tomorrow, certainly new buyers outnumbered PALM holders/COMS sellers today.

And maybe this distortion is the reason behind 3Com's pitch to analysts yesterday.

I guess I've said it before, but this thing has new wrinkles almost every darned day.
