The answer is yes for smaller and underutlized fabs. It is also probably true that AMD's yields are substantially less than Intel's yields.

Intel has the best yields in the industry for complex logic IC's. Probably, the Intel yields for processors are 20 % points better for Intel, e.g. 80% vs 60%.

But this is definitely a WAG.

AMD's fabs are big although I think Intel's Fab12 is a little bigger than the 6,000 wafers per week of AMD's Fab25 but Intel doesn't publish the wafer start capacity of their fabs.

The Intel numbers are good die out but some loss will occur at assembly and final test. If Intel is typical of the industry then expect the final test yields to be >95%. AMD's numbers are shipped units.

It is hard to understand how there can be such a wide discrepancy between the outputs of the fabs of 2 leading edge companies when the market is demanding more processors than can be produced. If AMD has good yields, what would you expect to see when comparing the 2 companies if both companies are trying to achieve maximum output? You draw your own conclusions.
