Oxidized One:What is the confusion. The stupid corporate Purchasing Dept. should just ask for a discount on the machines to offset the cost per machine that arises from "buying the O/S 2x". The only problem here is some corp. purchasing mgr. who isn't doing his job. JFD

Rusty - this is the weirdest bunch of misinformation I have seen in a long time. The assumptions about licensing terms and corporate practice are so far from any scenario I have encountered that I have to wonder what Mr. McDonald was using for research.

The big vendors - CPQ, DELL, HP, IBM - are also LARs - Large Account Resellers - and can therefore administer Select agreements. One of the sales techniques pioneered by DELL and now in use by all the big boys is to go to corporate customers and help them manage their Select versus OEM purchase of OS and other software to give the customer the lowest price for the products.

I don't know if it is McDonald or the clients calling him who don't understand how select agreements work, but a customer who "wipes his disk" and then installs his corporate image can easily arrange to pay only for the bits he is actually using. The customer would have to go out of his way to pay twice. DELL will do this as a factory option for most of their clients.
