hiker90, Welcome to the thread. Vman seems to have enabled quite a few new posters. That's good.

Since you have lurked here for a while, you know that there is quite a bit of give and take in opinions on this thread. It is in that spirit that I disagree with one of the tenets of your position, noting that my views are not necessarily, in fact probably not, representative of the thread in general. You said G* is simply a super-cellular system. That where I disagree. G* has advantages and disadvantages as compared to cellular. If someone were to buy a G* phone with the expectation that the G* service would offer all the cell benefits that they are used to plus expanded coverage, they will become disillusioned immediately. G* doesn't work indoors; it doesn't work in some valleys either (whether formed by buildings or hills). To use it in a car with comfort and safety requires the car to have a car kit. The in-service battery life is pitifully small. The phone is big. But, on the plus side G* offers service where none other exists, and the call clarity is very good; it provides (if I remember right) greater security of conversations, against all but government agencies who hook into the gateways. And the G* phone can be used as a cell phone too, with a different phone number.

I was intellectually aware of these tradeoffs for a while, but it took using the service to allow them to sink in.

All IMHO and FWIW.
