Tench,

" downplaying Itanium and hyping up Alpha"

And yes, Intel concerned about UltraSparc, etc... but
that wasn't my point as you can recognize. My point was
that EV68 is already selling in several high-end solutions
(RFP's that take months and long term committments) when
Paul's point from his post was: "who would even BUY
Alpha EVxyz [hype]". Pretty clear now.

"Back-end server, not making inroads?"

Depends how you measure and also we will know more
when 4Q 2000 is said and done and we can see how they
did with their Wildfire projections. $1 billion in
Wildfire isn't too shabby of a start. The next spin on
that box will more solidly nail down a high-end niche
(EV7 is a much better high-end solution).

By the way, your assertion in the other threads about
Itanium and SDRAM is a stretch. Look what Nathan
Brookwood (one of the better analysts) says:

ebnews.com

“When Itanium [then code-named Merced] started development
three years ago, PC100 wasn't even in the market and Direct
Rambus was then in the distant future,” he said. “At that time,
PC100 looked like a good choice, but has now been far overtaken
by rapid technology growth in the market.”

---

PC100 in his words has been "far overtaken" by advances
in the marketplace. Funny , isn't it? Now, is that kind of
language is a stretch on his part, or it is accurate.
Which is it? I say it is accurate. Much delayed Itanium
as he points out is targetting technology that looks rather
crusty 2 years out. Too bad it didn't ship when it should
have, huh?
