Tero- How does GSM IPR work? Do producers of chips pay amounts to multiple companies, to a pool or what? Part two of the question is that if an entity purchases another entity that produces GSM chips, do royalty payments have to be renegotiated? Is there any upfront licensing fee?

Anyone who knows how this works, please explain.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Tero:

Nice article on Nokia:

thestreet.com

One thing which puzzles me. Even though everyone here is talking about it, you didn't even mention Nokia's Qualcomm division. An oversight?

tero: Your Nokia article was a masterful job as usual. And if voice were key it would be comprehensive. But data is where the future of wireless is and there was no mention of the real world of the future nor Nokia's role in it that I saw, or perhaps I just missed it.

Sadly, this seemed similar to a battleship admiral's view of warfare prior to World War II - and the problem of fighting the last war. Motorola, Ericsson and Nokia were the main combatants in the last war - voice.

But in the next war - data, what will be Nokia's advantages and war plan? No clue about that in your article. Do you plan another one to follow which will cover mobile wireless data / internet? Will look forward to that.

Best.

Chaz

What ever happened to Tero? I appreciated his insight on NOK, and wondered what his thoughts are with NOK at $36.

Tero?
