Popular IBM ThinkPad Models Feature Microsoft's Windows 2000 Professional to Meet Growing Demand Among Enterprise Customers

SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2000--IBM said today that ``plug and play'' features of Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional, pre-loaded on IBM ThinkPad notebooks, enable users to easily add hardware options such as scanners, the IBM UltraPort Camera and the IBM Wireless LAN PC Card to their notebook computers without the need to reboot their systems.

Several of the new IBM ThinkPad models, including the recently announced ThinkPad A Series and ThinkPad T Series, feature Windows 2000 Professional. These new product lines are designed to enhance and simplify the mobile computing experience through easy access to IBM help and information via the ``ThinkPad button,'' and new ease-of-use features, including common swappable components and built-in ports for modem and LAN connections. More than two dozen other ThinkPad systems, including the popular ThinkPad iSeries, also support Windows 2000 Professional.

``Windows 2000 automatically configures new hardware devices, making setup easier for computer users,'' said John Frederiksen, general manager, PC Experience, Microsoft Corp. ``Microsoft has also created a program to digitally sign hardware drivers, which improves overall driver reliability and simplifies setup for users. This is one of those areas where Windows 2000 helps customers to significantly reduce their total cost of ownership.''

ThinkPad A Series -- The desktop alternative

The ThinkPad A Series is comprised of a broad range of desktop alternative notebooks, ranging from affordable to high-performance models with exceptional graphics features. With a travel weight starting at 5.9 pounds (1), the easy-to-use ThinkPad A20m offers a wide range of affordable models with a Mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor at 750 MHz (2), 700 MHz or 500 MHz or a Mobile Intel Celeron (TM) processor at 550 MHz or 500 MHz , 64MB RAM (upgradable to 512MB,) hard drive up to 12GB (3), and TFT display up to 15 inches.

The ThinkPad A20p incorporates exceptional multimedia and graphics performance including: the ATI Rage (TM) Mobility 128 video chip, 16MB VRAM, S-video ports for video capture and playback, MGI VideoWave III video editing software, DVI support via docking, an Intel Mobile Pentium III processor at 750 MHz or 700 MHz featuring Intel SpeedStep (TM) technology, 128MB RAM (upgradable to 512MB,) 20GB or 18GB hard disk drive, and 15-inch SXGA Plus (1400x1050) display all in a 1.5-inch profile (1).

ThinkPad T Series -- The leading thin-and-light offering

The ThinkPad T20 is ideal to take on the road because models start at 4.6 pounds and feature a 1.3-inch thin profile and up to 4-hours of battery life. The ThinkPad T20 is powered by an Intel Mobile Pentium III processor at 750 MHz, 700 MHz or 650 MHz featuring Intel SpeedStep technology with 128MB of RAM (upgradable to 512MB) and 8MB of VRAM. It is available with 14.1-inch or 13.3-inch XGA display, up to a 20GB hard disk drive and is available with DVD-ROM or CD-ROM standard.

``Large enterprise customers want the flexibility that Windows 2000 Professional offers them,'' said Joe Clabby, vice president, Aberdeen Group. ``IS managers tell us that Windows 2000 offers greater reliability, security, and better management than any other previous Windows operating environment. We're seeing more and more examples of large enterprise customers choosing Windows 2000 Professional and we expect that trend to strengthen throughout 2000 and into 2001.''

Web Information

Device drivers were just one of the topics discussed in a Webcast series offered to customers around the world. IBM received thousands of Web hits from users who wanted to learn more from the series: ``Early Adopters of Windows 2000.'' A replay of the Webcast can be found at webevents.broadcast.com

Topics discussed on the Webcast include Windows 2000 Professional Internet scalability and security, Web application services, system reliability features, and centralized management and desktop management features.

Re: "Jim, all, IBM has 1 GHz PIII desktops on their website, say they'll ship it today!"

I hope poor Scumbria will find a good support group to help him through this crisis.
