Just found this on Jayski:

Soft Walls at Indy: Indianapolis Motor Speedway has installed a special polyethylene energy dissipating system -- padded walls -- inside the turn four exit. The padding was first used here in 1998 and updated last year. It has attracted special attention in the wake of two fatal crashes this season at New Hampshire Speedway. Driver Kenny Wallace said the padding should be mandatory at every track. NASCAR spokesman Kevin Triplett said the association will consider any safety suggestions, but stopped short of endorsing the largely-untested padded walls(Tennessean)(8-4-2000)

Should've been turn three.....
