Tony, <I wonder if the X-Box will be able to keep up with PlayStation2>

I heard that X-Box will feature a DVD movie player, just like Sony PS2. In fact, I can't imagine why Microsoft would make any part of X-Box less powerful than PS2, or omit any feature that PS2 has.

My coworkers seem to be more enthusiastic about X-Box than I am. They cite these points:

- Programming API for X-Box is already established, namely DirectX. This makes it easy for developers to make games for X-Box. Meanwhile, I'm hearing about (short-term?) headaches associated with Sony PS2 game development.

- X-Box's more powerful hardware should allow for even more realistic-looking games than PS2. I guess that remains to be seen, given that the realism in games is ultimately dependent on the developer, not necessarily the hardware.

- The gaming industry is fluid, where no single company dominates for more than one or two generations. First it was Atari, then Nintendo, then Sony. Next Microsoft?

Of course, I still remain skeptical, considering how much sheer mindshare PS2 has, coupled with Microsoft's late entry into the next-generation gaming arena. Maybe Billy G. is considering using his old strong-arm Microsoft tactics again to scare game developers away from PS2.

Tony - Re: "I wonder if the X-Box will be able to keep up with PlayStation2 regarding"

NVIDIA will be heavily involved with the graphics engine as well as other "goodies" from the X-BOX standpoint.

If Microsoft includes a DVD-ROM drive instead of the standard CD-DRIVE, DVD will be slam dunk.

Further, if Microsoft makes the X-BOX with a socketed Pentium III, the machine should be easily upgradeable to >1.3 GHz Pentium IIIs which should appearing sometime later next year based on 0.13 micron technology.

The "hobbyists" will love it !
