Mobile Phone Subscribers Top 60 Mln

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Spurred by lower phone rates and the addition of an Internet-access function, the number of people subscribed to mobile phone services exceeded 60 million in Japan as of July 31, according to a preliminary report released Monday by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The category comprises cellular phones, car phones and PHS (personal handyphone system) handsets.

NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) remains the largest winner in the domestic mobile phone market, as most rival firms lost subscribers during the month.

The number of cell phone subscribers increased by 767,300 from the end of June to 54,375,600.

NTT DoCoMo acquired 643,000 new subscribers in July, about 84% of the combined increase, for a total of 31,576,000. The surge was driven by its i-mode Internet service, which had 10 million members as of Monday.

The eight DDI Cellular group lost 60,400 subscribers in the month to 6,230,400 in all, while IDO Corp. lost 3,000 to a total of 3,942,000.

DDI Corp. (9433), IDO and KDD Corp. (9431), which will merge to form KDDI in October, started to provide service under the "au" brand from July, but the joint effort has not resulted in the acquisition of new subscribers yet.

Subscribers to PHS services have risen for the fifth consecutive month on the back of rising demand for data communications. NTT DoCoMo is showing growth in this area as well.
