My only guess is that AMD felt they had their hands full with single processor desktop designs and rollouts over the past year. If Compaq and Gateway show up with it (not so much Gateway IMO, because they have no other server lineup to bind with it) whole new ball game possible, at least in the low end, web server type apps.

Intel already has third party support - ALi announced their DDR chip set for Pentium IIIs (Athwipeys also) - and VIA is on the way.

Because of the SMP EV6 MBs already out there supporting Alpha, my theory has been that it's not a chipset problem but an Athlon problem.
