This story from a wireless trade magazine:

Lucent CFO’s Bonus Bank
Deborah Hopkins, Lucent’s new chief financial officer
hit the jackpot with her new job. According to papers
filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission,
Hopkins scored a $4 million cash bonus for signing on
earlier in the year, plus a $650,000 annual salary and
a possible $650,000 annual bonus based on the
company’s performance. Although she has not been
with the company for the entire fiscal year, Hopkins,
formerly an executive with Boeing, will collect the
entire performance bonus this year, according to
reports.

The astronomical bonus isn’t the first for high-tech and
other corporate executives and likely won’t be the
last. Last month in the U.K., an institutional investor
advocacy group publicly balked at the $15 million
bonus given to Vodafone AirTouch CEO Chris Gent for
executing the takeover of Germany carrier
Mannesmann AG.
