Hopkins Debby Hopkins is the Chief Financial Officer of Lucent Technologies, responsible for executive management and oversight of all financial operations for the company. Before joining Lucent, Hopkins served as senior vice president and chief financial officer for The Boeing Company. In addition, she led the company's Investor Relations and Corporate Development activities. She also served as chairman of Boeing Capital Corp., which provides worldwide financing and leasing for a wide range of aerospace products and commercial equipment. In 1999 Hopkins was ranked sixth in Fortune magazine's list of the 50 most powerful women in American business. In Business Week's listing of the 25 top managers of 1999, she was highlighted as a manager to watch in 2000. Prior to joining Boeing, Hopkins served as vice president of Finance and chief financial officer for General Motors Europe, a $26 billion operating unit located in Zurich, Switzerland. In this position, she served on GM's European Strategy Board. Previously, she was GM's general auditor from 1995 through 1997. Before joining GM, she spent 13 years at Unisys Corporation, with her final assignment there as vice president and general manager of Worldwide Information Services, the systems integration and consulting arm of Unisys. From 1993 to 1995, she served as vice president and corporate controller and chief accounting officer. Prior to that, she served as vice president of Corporate Business Analysis from 1991 to 1993, where she played a pivotal role during the company's turnaround phase. She also served in program management where she led the worldwide marketing launch of Unisys imaging systems products. Additionally, Hopkins drove the establishment of the company's Global Customer Services business unit. Hopkins also held financial positions at Ford Motor Company and National Bank of Detroit. Hopkins is a member of the board of directors of DuPont. She also is on the boards of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the Private Export Funding Corporation. In the community, she serves on the board of directors of the Seattle Symphony. Hopkins earned a bachelor's degree from Walsh College at Troy, Michigan. She also attended an executive development program at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. In 1999, she was recognized by the Walsh College Alumni Association and received its Distinguished Alumni Award. She supports the college as a member of the board of trustees. Hopkins, 45, succeeded Lucent's former CFO Don Peterson, who now is chief executive of a new $8 billion equipment company Lucent plans to spin off later this year. Hopkins was a key architect of Boeing's financial turnaround. She was widely credited with helping the aerospace giant rebound from a 1997 loss -- its first in 50 years. In just 16 months at Boeing (NYSE:BA - news), she helped refocus management on the bottom line and oversaw sequential profits in 1998 and 1999. Analysts expect Hopkins to help Lucent cut overhead costs, improve procurement procedures and implement major organisational changes in the coming months.
