The reason Dell reacted so strongly is not due to the reputation of the analysts. The reaction responsibility rests completely on Dell as they are no longer the first source for bad news. Before Feb 16, 1999, Dan Niles(?) predicted a shortfall in revenues to the penny, but nobody believed him and we had the famous run up and crash. How many times has this happened after that? Now, if Joe Analyst says anything, investors fall all over themselves to get out.

It will take a couple of CPQ years for Dell to regain control of bad news. IMO

Best,
Mike
