another vote for creating an image for your drive.

once you have your system stable and tweaked the way you want it with all of the necessary drivers, create an image. store the image on another drive/partition, onto a CD, or some other media (jaz/zip). restoring is MUCH less painful than reinstalling.

as for data, i like to archive all of my data onto a cd every once in a while. i have had bad experiences with magnetic storage media and so i relish the peace of mind i experience when i burn a CD.

btw, i am intrigued by the accolades given to Drive Image on this thread. i use Ghost mostly due to inertia; i've been using it for years and i can almost restore a drive with my eyes closed.
