Now if only the PC manufacturers would be so kind as to put the USB ports on the front of the boxes, not the back.

Some of the newer PC's from the mainline OEM's do have USB ports on the front.

Recall that "mass storage" is the key and ultra-high density flash is the solution.

The 'key' that I refer to appears to be more of a 'temporary cache' function, as served by my current Compact Flash card in my Nikon 950. The digital contents of the flash memory are repeatedly being dumped over to the PC and overwritten with fresh data. It doesn't really serve the purposes of "mass storage" per se (at least not mass storage's typical archival function).

If Eli is hedging his bets (by the way, there has been no product announcements to suggest this is the case)...

At a later time, I might have more to add with regard to this, both in terms of conjecture, or in response to an actual product announcement. However, I did find the following announcement quite interesting:
