I was at a party this weekend, and was talking with some people who were very successful playing the highflyers late last year and early this year. One guy watched his portfolio go from $200K in August '99 to $600K in February, and he is now down to $200K again. Another took out a home equity loan in late February to put the money in the Munder NetNet fund. Although I don't feel happy about the misfortune of others, it's difficult for me to understand what possessed these otherwise responsible people to be so reckless, other than that they were caught up in the euphoric moment... Anecdotally, I think that the speculative bubble has been popped, but that the process of liquidation has just begun.
