Gelsinger was using his save face and don't piss off Rambus language.

The technical explanation of his remark is:
The large cache on P4 reduces DRAM utilization to the point where high bandwidth DRAM is not required. If I were a Rambus long, I would be deeply concerned about Intel execs making this sort of statement.

The key performance characteristic of DRAM is latency. DRDRAM is no faster (and probably slower) than SDRAM in this regard.
