NEW YORK -- Barnesandnoble.com and Microsoft on Monday will open the first major online store selling digital books, the New York Times reports in its Monday edition.

The new site will offer books which can be downloaded and read on screen, or printed on demand via high-speed presses, technology not yet possessed by Amazon.com, the bookseller's main competition on the net, according to the Times.

Microsoft will also introduce the latest version of its free software for reading e-books on screen, the Times reporteds. The new vewrsion is available for laptop and desktop computers as well as for handheld devices.
