OK. The crooks in the pits control the mechanism so I will have to defer to them. :-))

They just look at the balance of orders and make a decision to open a stock based on the number of buyers vs the number of sellers AT THE OPEN. It is caused by there being more buyers (pre market open) than sellers (or the reverse for downgaps).

Why do market participants feel that a retest is required on bottoms before they consider it a valid bottom? or

Why do stocks tend to retrace 50%(in other words...why do Fib numbers work so well in TA?)

I think sometimes certain TA works because so many people "believe" that it works thereby MAKING it to work.
