ONI's product, the ONLINE9000 can deliver traditional SONET as well as non-SONET services like Gigabit Ethernet, ESCON, and Fiber Channel.

tpboxster, Nortel's OPTera product can also deliver SONET and non-SONET like Gigabit Ethernet, ESCON and Fiber Channel.

ONIS and SCRM are no more open and non-proprietary than Nortel. Paul Johnson's statement makes no sense at all.

tpboxster - Thanks for providing a possible clarification for the peculiar wording in Johnson's article although it is my understanding that both NT's Optera that Ken mentioned and Ciena offer similar functionality. Frank A. Coluccio is musing about the continued dependence of optical switches on SONET for reliability in a recent post and is worth a quick read siliconinvestor.com. - peggylynn
