Re: The processors are currently being sold on the street for between $1,200 and $1,250. Intel is hardly pricing the FCPGA 1 GHz processor to sell in high volume.

Is this the beginning of the flood we were promised? :^)

There may be a flood of 1GHZ parts coming. Just not from Intel:

Peace will break out on the 1GHz microprocessor front in the continuing war between Intel and AMD on the 5 September.

AMD has taken a little while to perfect its price weapon but on that day will drop the price of its 1GHz Athlon to $495 and its 800MHz Athlon to $190 in quantities of 1000, according to one of its US OEMs, speaking under conditions of strict confidentiality to The Register.

Gopher, OT a bit The prices on Akihabara are not rationally related to real world prices. In retail the Japanese pay huge markups. I would say to 20-30% off those prices to bring them to near the price we would pay here.I have cruised akihabara many times and I have found new and unique stuff, but almost never cheap stuff.
Even the surplus stores in the side lanes are expensive.
On the flip side you can get every part you might need to prototype a new piece of test equipment, with pressure sensitive keypads, the right knobs etc, IDC connectors and sockets for all the funny connectors you see inside new vcrs etc, just an amazing array of parts. You will find small shops whose schtick is power resistors. A tiny place, maybe 6 feet wide crammed with plastic slide boxes on all sides and rear and even in a crawl space above the counter. Every kind you can imagine. Not many of each one, and a bit limited in the higher wattages, but amazing.
There are knob shops, jack shops, wire sellers, tool sellers, it is a sight to see.
Of course it is due to the high density concept in the orient. All the copper pipe stores will be in one area. A whole block or so with copper pipe stores, then into brass valves and then steel pipe and sheet metal and bamboo etc.
This leads to competition as well as price fixing, like the 4 gas stations on the 4 corners of a small tonw with the same price for gas..
I would suggest that you allocate 2-3 days if you want to do a really thorough prowl of Akihabara, then off to Roppongi, for a good time.
Carrying this to the extreme there is a street full of cathouses. very strange place. All themed. Greek palaces, schoolgirls, nurses, Swedes, and other nationals, etc and dozens of others. OK to look, but not to enter, I was chicken, or faithful, yes, faithful...that's me.
