RHAT news......Ericsson and Red Hat team forces
When Linux naysayers point out Red Hat's (RHAT) less-than-stellar
inroads into the desktop and server operating system markets, CEO Bob
Young whips out numbers from International Data Corp. showing that
handheld and notebook-style devices will outship PCs by the year 2005 --
and Linux-based solutions, whether by Red Hat or others -- stand a good
chance of grabbing a big share of the market.

This past week, Red Hat enhanced its position in the embedded market
when it announced it was teaming with Ericsson (ERICY) to jointly
develop consumer products and services for home communications. The
first product is the already announced Ericsson cordless screen phone.
Ericsson will also work with Red Hat on open source development tools
that, available free, should pique the interest of developers in using Linux.

This deal will use the skills of Red Hat's newly acquired Cygnus
engineering team. Red Hat is based in Durham and Ericsson has a
1,400-employee operation in nearby Research Triangle Park. (See "Red
Hat boards the Bluetooth ship.")
