At Summer Peak August 7, 1000 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales in the third week of July 2000 decreased nearly 10 percent in volume and value for both desktop and notebook PCs compared with the previous week. The second week of July appeared to be the peak of this summer's shopping season. According to a survey conducted by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company which collects point-of-sale (POS) data for 3,200 large electric home-appliance discount shops in Japan, PC sales in the third week of July (July 10 - July 16, 2000) decreased 9.2 percent from a week earlier in units and 9.2 percent in value. Compared to the corresponding period a year earlier (July 12 - July 18, 1999), sales surged 37.4 percent and 17.6 percent in units and value, respectively. The average retail sales price for PCs stood at 192,623 yen, down 22 yen from 192,645 yen a week before (108.37 yen = US$1). In addition to a decrease in sales from a week earlier, the year-on-year growth ratio also showed a decline compared to the corresponding period a year earlier. Although an 40 percent increase in units and a 20 percent increase in value has so far been observed year-on-year, the growth rates decreased to somewhere around 30 percent in units and 10 percent in value this week. The growth ratios were lower than those for the same period last year because sales in the summer 1999 shopping season maintained a higher level up to the fourth week of July 1999. The sales booster in July 1999 was "Office 2000" introduced by Microsoft Co., Ltd. PC demand continued longer as manufacturers marketed their products with Office 2000 preinstalled.
