We had such a great time that we couldn't believe we had been in the restaurant that long. << And it was almost a lot longer. We were in a very nice, cozy, crowed, subterranean restaurant with a number of small rooms. We knew we were the only ones left in our room, and we knew the restaurant had gotten real quiet, but when we got up we realized just how empty it was. I think we walked through all five dining rooms, and did not see a soul. Finally, in a small alcove, we discovered the wait staff finishing their dinner. Phew. It was a truely delightful evening, but at one point I was reminded of a night several years ago in Kosovo. At the time I had never heard of Kosovo but my wife and I were vacationing in Yugoslavia and we got terribly lost on winding mountain roads in an area where there were very few towns. Instead of arriving at our destination by 8pm it was after 1am, and the one hotel we found was creepy - unclean, expensive, and with a machine gun carrying soldier near the lobby. We search in vain for other accommodations but found none. At close to 3 in the morning we found a bar and decided to go in to ask if anyone knew of a hotel. We spoke with three guys drinking beers at a table. They told us that because of unrest in Kosovo the government wanted to discourage visitors, thus explaining the lack of hotels. But they were thrilled to be meeting Americans and said they would put us up for the night. The most talkative said that the family of one of them was building a new house. It was not fully completed, but we could all stay there for a night. I had never before accepted an invitation from a guy in a bar at 3am, but at the time it looked good. As we approached the new housing development, we realized that none of the homes were yet occupied. Perhaps sensing a bit of apprehension on my part, our would-be host spoke up: "I'm sure you have heard stories about foreigners being kidnapped, but you do not have to worry, you will be safe with us." Well, I was not worried before he said that, but after the statement is made, one starts to think. Anyway, I had told Mike that I had never before met an Internet-friend in person. As a means of allaying any concerns he and his wife quickly offered that they were not ax murderers. The night in Kosovo turned out fine, and the evening with Mike and his wife was excellent, but assurances can be tricky. StockHawk
