Gopher, If you ever fly to the orient, see if you can add a stopover in Japan. I day is barely enough to get from the airport and downtown, to akihabara and back to the airport, so 2 days is the real minimum.
Best is early AM arrival, check most bags at the held bags depot(check when they close...take note), get a room at a hotel near akihabara and do your prowling for 2 days and a night and then go on your way.
Take no taxi to the airport. Use the trains, far faster, and they will get you there in time. the taxis will not. the taxis are OK for short hauls in the city.
Check the voltage on stuff, much Jap stuff is 100 volts 60 HZ, it will work over here, but at a place that has 125 it might be a bit under stress.
Lots of ham radio gimmix and other toys that are marketed in Japan only.
They have company stores, like Panasonic, Sony etc, that sell only stuff from that 1 company.
It is changing now. US retailers are slowly knocking down the 4-5 tier Japanese distribution system, but they are fighting and land costs are staggeringly large. A lot that would be $250,000 in a large US city is $10 million there.
They have 30 story parking garages with all the cars parked one on top of the other in elevator shafts, of course they have a system to keep them apart. You park in #22 and they bring that car to the street level and you get your car back. They have turntables for cars to save the space needed to run the car to change where it points.
They have 'subsidised dates' where schoolgirls date older men who pay them, we call it prostitution, but they actually have a date, go to a club or? and a restaurant and then to a hotel. Not just 10 minutes in a crib.
Try snake alley in Taipei, Taiwan, buy all you want.
Try the street of mens paradise in Taipei, but don't buy.
Try the night market in Taipei

Well enough OT for now.
