If one knew that one was at a top and that a significantly lower bottom was to follow, then of course one should cash in. The problem is that one doesn't know. Moreover, in a taxable account, one has allow for the taxes before one can even get back in at breakeven.

If the business case for the company is unchanged, you should ignore those swings to the upside just as much as you ignore the ones to the downside. The question in LTB&H is the overall trend, not these short term oscillations, no matter how tempting they can be (usually in hindsight!).
