PT, Re: Are we seeing Socket A TBirds from major OEMs yet? I would have thought AMD would provide samples to allow for verification in advance of the release.

I think that even with these samples it still takes some time (i.e. months). I don't know of any major OEM with Socket Thunderbirds right now. Gateway is still selling Slot Thunderbirds, HP as well (AFAIK). But I think this will change soon, this fall's shopping season the latest.

AMD seems to be confident, too: (from tweakers.net)

Description of Change: AMD Athlon processors will not be manufactured in Slot A module form after September 24th, 2000.

Reason for Change: To maximize processor output on the Socket A PGA package to keep up with demand for the new infrastructure and increase the manufacturability of the Athlon processor.

Application Impact: Customers will need to use a motherboard that supports the Socket A infrastructure to utilize processors manufactured in the fourth quarter of 2000 and beyond into 2001.
