It’s Raining Fish
Storm Sweeps Fish From Sea, Drops Them on Town

By Lucrezia Cuen

L O N D O N, Aug. 7 — British residents say there was a
clap of thunder, followed by a rip of lightning and
then to their surprise — the skies opened up and
rained fish onto the seaside village of Great
Yarmouth, Norfolk.
Retired ambulance
driver Fred Hodgkins, 65,
told Britain’s Metro the
skies went black during a
heavy thunderstorm, and
what he first thought to
be hail began to rain
down on his yard.
On closer inspection
he discovered the ‘hail’
was scores of tiny silver
fish.
“At first I thought I
might have something
wrong with my eyes,” he
said. “The fish were all
dead, although they
looked fresh as if they
had come out of the sea.”

A Small Tornado
Turns out they were pretty fresh. A spokesman for the
British Meteorological Office (The Met) says a small tornado
spun off a thunderstorm over the North Sea this weekend
and apparently swept up the fish.
The mini-tornado carried the fish two miles before the
cloud burst depositing them on the resort village.
“These are not unheard of events but obviously rare,”
said the Met spokesman said. “People were calling us pretty
surprised. It’s not what you expect, especially early in the
morning before you’ve gone to the pub.”
