In the DC area, the bad periods for winter and summer are generally six weeks long. Obviously, that fluctuates,but there are about as many unusually mild years as unusually bad ones. Anyway, winter almost never gets below 20 degrees, and rarely goes lower than about thirty during the day. Frequently, the temperature is above freezing during snow periods, except for overnight freeze overs. This can be a hassle if the differential between day and night is too severe, because of icing.

This is a beautiful and varied area, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. Washington itself is one of the finest cities in the world: gorgeous in its center, attractive in many outlying sections, with among the best museums and other cultural institutions in the world, and all sorts of urban amenities, like restaurants with diverse cuisine, movie theaters specializing in art films, and bookstores with hard to find books.........
