Via's HDIT DDR chip set to support Intel, AMD processors in 2001

(2nd half of 2001, that is -- at best)

TAIPEI -- Via Technologies Inc. here today disclosed details about its scaleable High-Bandwidth Differential Interconnect (HDIT) architecture for a next-generation chip set supporting double data rate (DDR) memories in PCs and other computer systems.

The first Via Apollo HDIT chip set is scheduled to be available in sample quantities during the first half of 2001....>>

Hi blake paterson; Yep, DDR doubles next year. It started at 100MHz (200MHz bit rates), and goes to 200MHz (400MHz bit rates) early next year. Then it hits 266MHz with 533MHz bit rates later next year.

The 400MHz bit rate parts are already sampling, and graphics cards have been put in the hands of reviewers running at that rate.

That's a double.

Compare to RDRAM's sorry 33% improvement from 400MHz (800MHz bit rate) to 533MHz (1.06GHz bit rate) over the same time frame.

Blake, re: <Vaporware upon vaporware upon vaporware...>

Look's like Micron has intro'd development kit's for second tier accounts.

MICRON TECHNOLOGY, INC. INTRODUCES A NEW DESIGNER'S
TOOL BOX AND ENABLEMENT KIT TO SUPPORT DDR SDRAM
MEMORY TECHNOLOGY

As part of the toolbox, Micron is also providing DDR SDRAM
Enablement Kits and DDR product samples that system designers may
use to develop and validate DDR SDRAM systems. Designers have their
choice of DDR SDRAM component and module samples as well as a
platform supporting either unbuffered or registered DDR SDRAM
modules. Each of the DDR Enablement Kits includes a DDR SDRAM
motherboard, an unbuffered or registered 128MB DIMM module, and
support documentation.

(Note you get a complete kit of parts, including motherboard and unbuffered or registered 128MB DIMM module's).

And it seem's from the articles I've read, the tier one accounts have been designing DDR system's for desk tops for some time now. I expect to see a number of introductions at Fall Comdex.
