This is interesting news from Japan all right. If all the cards used were to contain FRAM it would be a huge "How to" for the rest of the world not to mention a Big Boost for RMTR and ferro.

But Fujitsu & Rohm couldn't feed that monster alone, not while producing for other OEM's and users at the same time. But there are the persistent, if quiet, claims of Hitachi that they have FRAM production at 256k.

If they were of a mind to join in this effort they could create a FRAM market in smartcards that doesn't directly compete in their established EEPROM and Flash markets.

Its pure speculation on my part, but its possible that its just such a "new market" they may have been waiting on. I am not sure I trust Hitachi. I guess time will tell.
