Question on shorting on the NYSE...TIA

I tried shorting VZ Verizon this morning. I put in an order at one of the big name online discount brokers at 8:44. They have extended hours but since this is a NYSE stock, it doesn't trade til 9:30 unless it's INSTINET. Correct me if I'm wrong. It was a market order to short 100 shares. I'm big time as you can see<g>. From what I can tell it starts trading at 9:30 at what I think is a 1 point range @ about 43 7/8 and over 300,000 shares but I get no confirmation. At 9:40 I cancel my order cause I don't know if first uptick is 3 points lower. Maybe that can't happen..Don't know. Maybe all I saw was INSTINET, but they say it started trading at 9:34. I thought as long as my market order was in, I'd be there at the open. Did I screw up? what's my broker role in all this?
