Hi NightOwl; I guess I'll try to avoid "tar baby" as a phrase, but it is a wonderful expression in a bunch of ways. First of all, babies are something humans value intensely, so the concept of a baby that someone was unable to get rid of carries with it the same sort of horrible thought of the expression "throw the baby out with the bath water." The fact is that babies do stick to their parents like tar; their parents love them deeply. (True by and large, but exceptions do exist.)

Along that line, I suppose the whole English speaking world sings the "Rock-a-bye Baby" song to their infants, with the modification involving winds blowing cradles in trees, despite the implications involved. I thought it a perfectly natural thing, until this was pointed out to me. My nephews and neices insist on being softly sang this tune while being held in the arms. They also like to be dropped at the end, then caught a foot or so off the floor. By the time they reach 4 or 5, this sort of activity can be kind of rough on one's back, but I suppose it is what uncles are for. Along with teaching them to make noises with their armpits, drink out of the bottom ends of straws, and use spoons to launch peas at the dinner table. (Don't tell these stories to the social workers when they come to visit.) I was surprised, but perhaps shouldn't have been when I've seen foreigners get horrified at the American tendency to throw babies in the air.
