Still, not everyone is convinced that RPR is the best topology for metropolitan-access rings. Anand Parikh, vice president of marketing at Appian Communications Inc. (Boxborough, Mass.), said that the formation of the IEEE and IETF groups was important in that it showed the optical industry was converging on the belief that ring topologies are best in the metro area, with meshes reserved for the long haul. But Parikh sees limitations in the proposals presented for RPR architectures thus far.

What architecture is NT's Cambrian using? How about Ciena? It would be helpful if Wirbel had listed the major metro players, but perhaps he thought readers already knew. I'm guessing they're both backing ring architecture, not mesh, in the MAN.

This comment is curious, too:

Mike Takefman of Cisco heads the 802.17 study group, which will hold its next meeting in Santa Clara, Calif., Aug. 28-29 — when most of the optical industry will be at the National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference in Denver.

Russo was grilled on Cisco's efforts in Sweden as well as the status of Monterey and Pirelli products. His answers were smooth --- everything on track and meeting expectations. Except regarding Sweden, he said he didn't know anything. (He must not read industry press.)
