Canbras TVA Selects Nortel Networks for Broadband Access, Value Added IPServices Tue Aug 08 09:01:00 EDT 2000 SAO PAULO, Brazil, Aug 08, 2000 (CNW via COMTEX) -- Canbras TVA Cabo Ltda., a leading nationwide provider of high-speed Internet connectivity and customized broadband content for residential and small business markets, has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) to address the broadband Internet access and services needs of its growing customer base in metropolitan Sao Paulo.
Using the Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN), Canbras TVA, a subsidiary of Canbras Communications, is the first service provider in Brazil to offer customized Internet services via secure cable access.
"Shasta 5000 BSN is a key component for offering new Internet services to our customers with secure access, as well as capturing new customers," said Mauro Garcia, regional vice-president, Canbras TVA. "We chose it because we wanted one platform for subscriber management and value-added services. With the IP (Internet Protocol) services platform, we can scale operations as we grow and reduce network operational costs. Shasta 5000 BSN flexible service provisioning for customized services, such as secure cable with firewall, gives us first-mover advantage in Brazil."
Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN is designed to power the subscriber edge of the network, where last mile technologies like cable or DSL meet the Internet backbone, and where broadband subscribers meet broadband services. These services include individual profiles for bandwidth and application handling, network-based IP-VPN for business customers, video conferencing, telephony, movies on demand, on-line gaming, and custom, ICSA.net-certified firewalls for basic 'hacker' protection.
"Providing secure Internet access is a 'must' for service providers," said Andy Castonguay, senior analyst, Pyramid Research. "Canbras Communications clearly sees the potential for value-added services in an expanding market. By providing secure cable, Canbras is better positioning itself in broadband access and services for residential and business customers."
"Nortel Networks provides solutions for secure Internet access and seamless migration to revenue generating Internet services," said Joe Hickey, vice-president and general manager, IP services, Nortel Networks. "With Shasta 5000 BSN, Canbras Communications is uniquely positioned to provide carrier- class, value-added, revenue-generating broadband services for years to come."
Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN enables carriers, competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to increase competitive advantage in transitioning from the simple connectivity model of first generation subscriber management systems to a cost-effective, network- based, value-added services model. Shasta 5000 BSN aggregates 1,000 to 100,000 subscribers in a single chassis. With a unique multi-processor architecture supporting more than 100 CPUs, Shasta 5000 BSN has unparalleled processing power to apply sophisticated services to individual subscribers. These include a network-based, ICSA.net-certified firewall for secure Internet access to 'always-on' broadband technologies; quality of service policy application; subscriber auto-provisioning; and network-based IP-VPN functionality.
