The concept is that EMC is trying to build into top line service people to catch and remove problems early/before they effect the storage. This was in addition to hardware duplication type schemes.

NetApp also has built in software capabilities that notify NetApp support and the customer when any kind of anomaly occurs, including soft errors that may indicate a problem that could be come "hard".

Customers tell of their NetApp support folks calling them to them that drive xyz in filer abc looks a little flaky, recommending that they "down" the drive so that the hot spare can kick in and advising them that a replacement drive has already be set up for shipment that same day.

EMC has one problem that is important to understand. Many of EMC's configuration options are not controllable by customers. They require support, including during initial installation, by EMC personnel. This is not the case with NTAP filers. A customer who is competetent in Unix or NT sys admin requires virtually no training in setting up a filer or in day-to-day sys admin.
