Major Vendors and Open Source Developers Collaborate in Historic Printing Industry Event
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 8, 2000--VA Linux Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LNUX - news) today announced its successful collaboration with HP in launching the first Open Source Printing Summit. The Open Source Printing Summit was held recently in Sunnyvale, California, bringing together more than ten vendors and over fifteen major Open Source projects for an historic two-day industry conference.
Participants included developers and representatives of companies such as HP, VA Linux, IBM, Sun, Canon, Epson, Lexmark, Okidata, Xerox and Microsoft, as well as developers from Samba, Ghostscript, LPRng, CUPS, PDQ, GPR, SysAPS, Linux Internationalization Initiative (Li18nux), XFree86, GIMP, GNOME, KDE, SourceForge, Red Hat, SuSE, the Linux Documentation Project and the IETF-Printing Working Group.
The Open Source Printing Summit was sponsored by HP and VA as part of the Open Source Printing Project (printing.sourceforge.net), which has been gaining momentum since its launch on VA Linux Systems' SourceForge(TM) earlier this year. Since January, VA Linux Professional Services has been working with HP to improve HP LaserJet printer support under Linux and Samba, and to advance the quality and functionality of Open Source printing overall.
``In working with HP and the broader Open Source developer community on SourceForge, we realized that creating this program would enable developers and vendors to discuss the most pressing issues in Open Source printing today,'' said Marty Larsen, director of VA Linux Professional Services. ``The Open Source Printing Summit has been a chance for the primary developers of Linux and UNIX printing technology to get together and plan a standards-based printing system for Linux and UNIX with richer functionality than was previously available.''

Vendor-community relations and printer driver development
Application support and standard printing APIs
Rendering, translating and image processing
Print spooler management
Font management and internationalization
IPP and other network protocols

As a result of the Open Source Printing Summit, participants have agreed to form specialized working groups focusing on topics such as a common printing API and vendor-community relations. In addition, VA Linux Systems plans to host a Birds of Feather session to demonstrate further developments in Open Source printing at the 4th Annual Atlanta Linux Showcase (ALS) taking place in Atlanta, Georgia from October 10 - 14, 2000.
