Doug,

Re: Costco Compaq Tbird

I wonder what chipset is being used here. RAM is PC-100, which suggests 750, but the hard drive is ATA/66, shich suggests that maybe it is KT133. Other possibilities are 750 with HD underclocked or 750 with a third party controller chip on the motherboard.

Anyway, if it is not KT133, it makes me wonder about KT quality / availability. AMD did use Compaq KT133 pre-production motherboard for the Tbird benchmarks on AMD site, and this was almost 2 months ago. In that time, it is reasonable to expect that Compaq would be able to start using it across the board.

I wonder if AMD could license KT133, obtain fab capacity or even fab it in Austin. If the rate Via is producing the chipsets is in fact 500K per month, there will be nothing to do in Austin, since Dresden alone is producing that many CPUs per month.

I have never called for AMD to comment on day to day issues involving running of the business or stock fluctuations. But in this case, I think it would be appropriate to make a statement regarding chipset availability from Via now, and the status of 760 chipset.

If there are problems, let's bring them to light, let the stock fall another $5+ points, but let's at least remove the cloud that's hanging over the entire CPU group.
