I'm afraid those guys and their shared brain cell couldn't grasp the distinction. How many people did you know that were REAL hippies? I didn't know any personally though everyone I had hung with had the "look" to some degree or another. Ran across real ones now and again. Read ZAP! comics. Lived in LA near Venice Beach, so my sphere was colored more by the surfer/drug subculture influence. And who wasn't using some drugs, having some sex, and rejecting some values, huh? We knew most older and short-haired people thought we looked like hippies.
