I think there was a blur in the definition. You are a few years older and I think between the Summer of Love and the fall of Viet Nam, the term began to lose almost all of its specificity. A similar thing is going on with the term "hacker" which I use without a negative bias. I've been told that is no longer standard usage and that the negative connotations dominate. Shoot! I liked being a hacker. Now I'm just a engineer. My dad was an engineer.
