Thanks for the link. It seems that their R&D efforts are fairly extensive. However, there was nothing there that indicated that DoCoMo was going to take part in the commercial sale of products based on the technologies that it claims to have developed. I think that the primary functions of DoCoMo's R&D arm are to develop technologies for use in the company's own networks, to create an intellectual property portfolio that it can license to third parties, and to act as a resource for collaborations with other companies with the aim of creating technologies that allow the latter to offer a better product, and allow the former to potentially boost the quality of the service it offers via its networks.

In other words, it's a lot like AT&T's Bell Labs 50 years ago. Here's to hoping that if they come up with something like the transistor, they're smart enough to know what they have on their hands (I don't have a position in the company, I just hate reading about those horror stories from the past).
