Jeez, what the hell is happening to this thread?? --- We're in the money (singing) We're in the money... --- Paul, IBM has problems that benchmarks and Press Releases just aren't going to solve. Everyone knows that at this point. --- We're within striking distance of their market cap. I say we'll overtake them by Halloween. ...and you won't need to be drinking that Sierra Nevada swill anymore <g> -JCJ

Dear Paul: Ah, a fellow Jeepster!! If your Jeep is 4WD you should investigate the Jeep Jamborees. They are very reasonable and so much fun. Sponsored by Jeep Corporation they are very well run, no rowdiness etc. They have many trails at each site so you can pick the one suitable for your experience level and Jeep setup. They will even train you in many of the Jamborees on "Starter" trails. JDN

ps: I too would run from a 42 pounder if its claws werent tied. Even so it was all I could do to keep the lid on the pot before it expired. At the time of the EVENT I was recently out of the Marines and feel I was in top physical condition and even then I had a lot of trouble with it. Personally, I would never do it again even if such a monster still exists somewhere.

paul - as a guy who has spent much of his career in database work, I can say for sure that the SUNW page you point to is pretty much complete bull, although well crafted.

Partitionable databases are ideal for most web applications, where the distribution of data is relatively predictable, and allocation of new data to maintain balance is largely automated. Likewise the management of data in a clustered configuration is more complex than in a single box, but not a lot more - certainly nothing like the linear increase in administrative overhead this article suggests.

The argument that the S80 is a 24P machine and the UE10000 a 64P machine also seems silly given that the S80 with 24P outperforms the UE10000 with 64P.

The comments about the mainframe capabilities of the UE10000 are accurate, but in the face of the rest of the BS, that is little comfort.
