During the Viet Nam war era, the history of Viet Nam was frequently published in popular magazines like Time and Life, and also in major newspapers. As for why Viet Nam was divided, I suspect that there are differing versions depending on your point of view. The simple explanation is that the Communists, under Ho Chi Minh, took over North Viet Nam and in 1954 the French garrison fell at Dien Bien Phu. The more complex explanation would have to include the Japanese occupation during World War II, and the importance of communism as a response to colonialism.

You probably are referring to the Geneva Protocols?
